It was another somber September, and another major disaster that struck
the United States--a crushing blow--psychologically and economically.
The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast stirred
up many of the same feelings and fears as the infamous Sep. 11 terrorist
attacks --only more so.
The Katrina hurricane Gulf Coast catastrophe has made us intensely
aware that our lives and our loved ones' lives are very precious and fragile and
that crisis brings out both the best and the worst in human nature. It also made it clear
that people who are poor suffer more in tough times than people who are not and
that the government and job markets are not dependable sources of long-term
financial security.
Joblessness, homelessness, poverty, economic downturns... This is the
stuff of nightmares and yet these conditions have become--and soon will
become--a day-to-day reality for many thousands of Americans.
As painful as these circumstances are, they are also going to stimulate
and speed up the creation of “an alternative American economy” that leads
people to use modern technology in connection with self-employment, home-based
businesses, networking and cooperation to achieve financial security and
freedom rather than desperately competing against others for limited
resources.
Yes, many people will be fueled by fear and will live in a miserable
world defined by scarcity, struggle and suffering.
But many others will
reject the pitiful crumbs offered to them by a crumbling economy and will,
with the encouragement and leadership of those who are already succeeding
in the alternative economy, take their financial future into their own
hands and their own homes, creating levels of prosperity, joy and freedom
they had previously only dreamed of...
